The Awards ~ A Tasty Competition

Napa, CA ~ The fourteenth annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival's The Awards ~ A Tasty Competition was held on March 16, 2007, at COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts in Napa.

Awards in the 2007 World Wide Mustard Competition were presented, and the Napa Valley Mustard Festival Chefs' Mustard Recipe Competition conducted at the black-tie red-carpet gala.

The Winners

As guests tasted and prepared to vote for their favorite mustard-inspired dishes, judges working behind closed doors in a blind tasting chose Chef Michael Messmer's Tallegio Soufflé with Fruit Mustard for the Critic’s Choice Award. Chef Messmer is the Catering Chef of Dean & DeLuca, St. Helena.

The Critic’s Choice portion of the competition was judged by Gene Burns of KGO Newstalk AM 810's Dining Around with Gene Burns, Karola Saekel Craib, Food Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, and Margo True, Executive Food Editor, Sunset Magazine. They had their work cut out for them as there were 19 entries to choose from!

Festival sponsors and guests also reaped rewards as they tasted original mustard-inspired dishes presented by the competing chefs. Toward evening’s end, ballots for the People’s Choice Award were counted and Executive Chef Vincent Nattress of Meadowood Napa Valley was elected by event patrons. Chef Nattress' dish was Corned Beef & Cabbage Salad.
